Letter #5: Shared History

Dear Sister,

This morning found me at Wells Fargo with my former husband ~ the ink barely dry from signing our divorce settlement. “So,” the young banker awkwardly started, “let me make sure I understand why you are here. There was a relationship change in the account.”

The divorce word was not used but there was a knowing feeling in his small office.  I passed my checkbook across the desk. It was our joint account we had opened 30 years ago with his name on the top line and mine underneath. 30 years. Opened when we got married and moved to Atlanta.

As I looked at that light blue check, tears started falling just looking at a simple piece of paper that represented so much history. That blank check held the names of two people who had lived at the same address and loved each other and shared dreams together. Now that check would carry only one person’s name.

Such a rough accounting, these dollars in a bank, of the incredible toll of the past few years, the uncertain ones ahead and the heartbreak in the middle.  A few more signatures and then we were done ~ walking out the door to our separate cars and separate lives.

That’s just one of hundreds of stories, dear sister.  I know you understand that level of history and painful severing.  But always remember:  even when you feel alone, you are never alone.

Here’s to asking God for faith to see His presence in our lives!

Love,

Your friend

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5b

“How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him! The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse nor his delight in the legs of the warrior; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.  Psalm 147: 1-5 & 10-11 (NIVUK)
